Oxidative Stress


What is Oxidative Stress?

We live with it every day. It’s the process that occurs simply be virtue of being alive and needing energy to move and keep ourselves going. Oxidative stress is what happens when our body makes energy, creating free radicals that the body must then deal with. Think of it like the rust that occurs when you leave something outside, or the pollution that gets generated by cars. Air pollution, toxic food, pesticides, herbicides, EMF, heavy metals, and physical stress are all sources of oxidative stress.

Oxidative Stress contributes to everything, through inflammation.

And it’s much worse than it’s ever been, unfortunately.

It’s responsible for much of what ages us and creates disease. At least 200 diseases are affected by or caused by oxidative stress. Cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, Cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer’s are just a few examples. And on a smaller symptomatic scale, it can interfere with mood, sleep, recovery, and really all forms of healing.

The body produces or uses antioxidants to combat this stress, and it relies on powerful enzymes to do it, like glutathione and catalase. We can just take glutathione as a supplement to bolster that, right? Not so much.

Supplements Don’t Work

The latest studies show that for the most part, supplement do not work to improve health. Some may have a limited effect on one area of health. But put simply, taking antioxidants in supplement form does not really help the body to combat oxidative stress to a significant degree. These types of antioxidants are exogenous antioxidants. They include things like Vitamin C, E, and even glutathione in supplement form.

So, what can we do?

Enter Nrf2

Nrf2 is a factor that activates a portion of our DNA responsible for the activation of antioxidant production. It supremely elevates the production of glutathione and catalase as well as a host of other powerful antioxidants to protect the body.

Once activated, your body produces more of what are called endogenous antioxidants. These types are orders of magnitude more effective than anything you could eat. You’d literally have to eat toxic levels of exogenous antioxidants to get the oxidative stress reduction benefit you would get by activating Nrf2.

Activation, not Supplementation

The key to managing oxidative stress, to getting the most out of all the healthy things you do to take of yourself every day, the foods you eat, the adjustments you get, the exercise you do, is to make sure you are activating your Nrf2 pathway.

There are several ways to do that, and I’ve been engaged in many of them.

  • Exercise, especially high intensity interval training
  • Fasting
  • Eating a ton of broccoli
  • Take an Nrf2 Activator, like Protandim.
